Self-Conception: Sosa on De Se Thought
More than 50 years ago, Quine ( 1956 ) brought the de re / de dicto distinction back to the attention of philosophers; in the following decade, Barcan Marcus, Donnellan, Kaplan, and Kripke initiated the debate confronting direct vs. descriptivist accounts of reference. The nature of de re or singular thoughts thus became one of the leading concerns of philosophers. In spite of the immediate popularity of direct-reference accounts, Ernest Sosa ( 1970 ) adopted early on a conservative latitudinarian or Fregean account of de re thought as just a case of de dicto thought. The debate goes on, with direct-reference approaches being the more popular standpoint; writers such as Soames ( 2005 ) , Recanati ( 2010 ) , or Jeshion ( 2010 ) have proposed different takes on the matter from that perspective. However, the tide is perhaps changing; important new work by both linguists and philosophers vindicates Sosa’s line, which Hawthorne and Manley ( 2012 ) call liberalism , which is a good representative. 1 In this chapter, I will be focusing on a critical discussion of Sosa’s related work on Chapter 5 Self-Conception: Sosa on De Se Thought

The Myth of the Problematic De Se
There is a lot that we don’t know about the metaphysics of thoughts (propositional attitudes) and about the semantics of their ascriptions. But the received view is that there is something particularly problematic about first person thoughts, commonly known as ‘de se’. These are thoughts we express in a special way, using first-person pronouns; thus, I now have a de se thought that I might expr...
Reference and Subjectivity
In ‘Fregean Reference Defended’ (1995), Sosa presents a sophisticated descriptive theory of reference, which he calls ‘fregean’, and which he argues avoids standard counterexamples to more basic variants of this approach. What is characteristic of a fregean theory, in his sense, is the idea that what makes a person’s thought about some object, a, a thought about that particular thing, is the fa...
